Electrical Diagnostics Using Hydraulic Principles

Electrical diagnostics can be a challenge for visual-kinesthetic learners. When explaining electrical concepts to automotive and HD technicians, hydraulic principles such as Pascal’s Law can be utilized to illustrate how electricity behaves in a circuit. This workshop will help you use well-known hydraulic concepts to become a better electrical diagnostician!

MACS Certified Technician Intensive (MCTI) is an immersive, hands-on training and certification experience designed for technicians who want to build real-world skills in mobile A/C and thermal management—skills that cannot be gained through online-only training.

The Mobile Air Climate Systems Association is proud to present our newest certificate training program, MCTI: MACS Certified Training Intensive. This new training offers technicians a chance to learn from top instructors in the classroom, while also participating in hands-on training with industry experts in the shop.

Based on MACS J2845 Mobile A/C Best Practices, this course describes the recommended practices and procedures for service and repair of MVAC systems in passenger cars and light trucks.

Different Refrigerants Need Different Oils (& Stabilizers?) That Offer Value-Added Potential for Service Shops

As the industry has evolved from R-134a to R-1234yf, different oils were required for the efficiency and lifespan of A/C systems. Now, options are being presented to look at transitioning existing R-134a systems to R-1234yf and perhaps other refrigerants as well. This talk will layout the needs of service shops to successfully transition vehicles as well as point out some value added additives that some garages may which to employ (and perhaps some to avoid).

Keith Glasgow was born and reared in the small town of Rockingham, NC, where he grew up in an automotive family that operated a general repair facility. As a high school senior, he won the North Carolina Plymouth Troubleshooting Contest – Written Skills, in 1978. Post high school, he worked as a transmission technician and builder at a GM Dealership from 1978 – 1982. In 1982 he assumed the operational control of the family business and ran it until 1987. He began teaching automotive classes, part time, at Richmond Technical College in 1986 and soon discovered his calling to teach full time. In 1987, he took the position as automotive department head and instructor at Nash Community College in Rocky Mount, NC. In 1990, the opportunity to become a GM ASEP instructor led him to follow his passion to Greenville, SC and teach at Greenville Technical College through 1999. He returned to his roots late in 1999 as a transmission builder until industry came calling in 2001. Keith then took the position as the NC / SC regional Instructor for AC Delco through 2006. Next, he became an AC Delco Market Area Service Manager until 2008. His next assignment was Regional Supervisor managing the AC Delco Southeast Region until 2019. In 2020, Keith completed his bachelor’s degree in business management graduating from Southern Wesleyan University – Magna Cum Laude. In 2020, Keith took the position of Southeast Regional Instructor and serves in that capacity to the present day. Throughout his GM journeys, Keith has acted as project leader, writer, and subject matter expert in many of the courses that he and others have delivered to the nation. Keith is the proud father of four children (all college graduates), four grandsons and three granddaughters.

Refrigeration Systems Operation and Testing

This seminar will provide technicians with the diagnostic techniques and strategies required to diagnose non-refrigerant related issues with the HVAC electronic controls that impact electronically regulated compressor operation and the air delivery system. Specific components and systems covered include HVAC control inputs, condenser and blower motor fan controls and operation, manual, electronic and automatic temperature control and electronic mode door actuators and their control of air delivery and airflow in single and multiple zone adjustable systems. Setup procedures for all related modules will be reviewed. This course will include simulated diagnostic exercises to apply the principles learned.

R-444A & R-456A Direct Replacement Refrigerants: What It Takes to Optimize Retrofit System Performance

R-444A and R-456A are emerging as practical options for direct replacement in mobile A/C systems, but achieving expected performance in retrofit applications requires more than a simple drop-in approach. This session will provide a field-focused perspective on what it takes to optimize system performance when retrofitting vehicles with next-generation refrigerants. The discussion will briefly revisit key system fundamentals—including fitting assemblies, service procedures, and equipment considerations—before shifting to real-world implementation. Drawing on recent laboratory and field testing, attendees will gain insight into the system-level adjustments, service practices, and performance considerations required to deliver consistent cooling across ICE, hybrid, and EV platforms. The session will also address common objections, control-related challenges, and misconceptions associated with “direct replacement” refrigerants, equipping shop owners and technicians with practical guidance as R-444A and R-456A become more widely available in the aftermarket.

This training seminar provides technicians an overview of refrigeration system design, operation, and servicing. Emphasis is placed on the skills required to effectively diagnose and service R-134a and R-1234yf Air Conditioning (A/C) systems. The physics of heat transfer, stages of a closed system refrigeration cycle, A/C system components and control devices, and common system failures are discussed from a diagnostics and servicing point of view. Proper and safe usage of A/C system service tools and equipment is covered to ensure the efficient repair of refrigeration systems.

Heavy Duty A/C Best Practices & J3126 Test Prep Class

Servicing heavy duty A/C systems has become more complicated in recent years as vehicle and equipment OEMs continue to build more modern and complex systems. Presented by Jerry Lemon, this class will help service technicians to better understand component design and integration, testing and replacement, along with recommended best service practices to get the job done right the first time.

Included in this training session is “MACS J3126 Heavy Duty Air Conditioning Certificate Test Prep Class”, which is one of the newest training programs offered by the Mobile Air Climate Systems Association. For more than ten years, MACS staff and MACS members worked closely with SAE’s HFTC6 committee (human factors technical committee) to sponsor and contribute technical knowledge and materials to the new Recommended Practice, “J3126 Air Conditioning Service Procedures for Off-Road Work Machines and Agricultural Tractors Using HFC-134a or HFO-1234yf Refrigerant”. This class explores these topics and prepares students for taking the certificate test.

Note: Lecture class will take place on Thursday afternoon. The J3126 test will be offered Saturday afternoon at 1:30pm, following a 30-minute review period.

EPA’s newest rulemaking (Rule #27) will allow the use of R-1234yf as a retrofit refrigerant.
