Job Overview

The Senior Thermal Systems Engineer at Komatsu Mining will collaborate with various design teams within Komatsu to determine HVAC changes required to keep up with development of new regulations; provide design standards and develop standard validation tests with pass fail criteria, recommending selected design approaches and support R&D groups as implemented.  Provide ongoing support to sustain these new HVAC designs through their useful product cycle.

Key Job Responsibilities

Senior Thermal Systems Engineer Responsibilities:

  • Understand thermal management, refrigeration capacities, and HVAC design characteristics and principles.
  • Selection of compressors, coils, expansion valves, fans, and other HVAC components to meet the challenges encountered in the mobile vehicle and mining equipment market (managing things like heavy vibration, dust, corrosion, extreme weather and 24/7 operation).
  • Work with OE product groups to develop integrated and reliable HVAC Solutions to meet Marketing specifications.
  • Facilitate the redesign of HVAC systems for new non-ozone depleting refrigerants; understand the EPA’s SNAP (significant new alternatives program) refrigerant alternatives, then influence and manage Komatsu’s approach to these changes.
  • Understand and manage risks and rewards associated with these changes and be able to communicate this to a broad base within the company.
  • Draft plans for these changes and provide leadership for execution of refrigerant change plans within a broad base in the company.
  • Designs detailing to be completed by offsite draftsman.
  • Attend and support Engineering Design Reviews, develop system maps outlining theory of operation and support DFMEA completion for various Komatsu R&D departments.
  • Collaborate with Aftermarket Support Team to determine HVAC requirements for HVAC retrofit installation kits that meet the new non-ozone depleting refrigerant regulations.
  • Collaborate with Komatsu Engineering & Product Development Teams in Milwaukee and around the world to support the integration of HVAC products into Komatsu Off-Highway and Mining Equipment Products.
