MACS is proud to announce the Ward J. Atkinson Mobile Thermal Management Memorial Scholarship.

Ward J. Atkinson began his career in mobile air conditioning in 1952 as an engineering technician working for the Chevrolet division of General Motors. His first project was to design and integrate the industry’s first front-mounted air conditioning system into the dashboard of the 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air. Ward had many other firsts during his time at GM, including the first fixed orifice tube, first cycling clutch, first suction throttling valve, and first automatic temperature control system. During this time, he also contributed to SAE Standards, leading the interior climate control committees.

After retiring from GM in 1981, Ward contributed to MACS as Technical Advisor, a role he held for more than 35 years, and was instrumental in developing the Section 609 technician training program.

The Ward J. Atkinson Mobile Thermal Management Memorial Scholarship pays tribute to Ward and his many contributions to the automotive air conditioning and vehicle thermal management industry by providing academic financial assistance to qualified students pursing their education in the field.

MACS plans to launch the scholarship fund in Spring 2026. Stay tuned to MACS and ACtion Magazine for updates.
