The value of a MACS membership

By Andy Fiffick, MACS Chairman and CEO

Someone asked me recently, “What’s the value of a MACS membership?” The question was an honest one. Why should anyone pay their hard-earned dollars to be a Mobile Air Climate Systems Association member?

I know why I value my membership, and I’ll tell you my answer at the end of this column. First, I’ll share comments from other members.  I sent out an email to a random list of members from service, education, manufacturing and distribution to see how they answered the question.

“MACS helps me stay aware of the rapidly changing mobile A/C industry; I also attend the convention to learn new information and plan my inventory,” said Allen Johnson of AJ’s Garage of Campbellsville, KY.

“Having a MACS membership means we are professionals who stay up to date on everything associated with the mobile air conditioning business. My technicians stay on top of the latest news and regulations,” remarked Randy Justus of Clayton Autos, a service shop in Knoxville, TN.

“We are in Belize, and some technical back-up and parts are distant. That is where industry networking, including technical advice and training from MACS, has proven very helpful,” said John Barman of ACROSS A/C Repair in Spanish Lookout, Belize.

“Here at Central Texas College, we teach and apply the theory of automotive heating, ventilation and air conditioning troubleshooting and repair. Focused on basic refrigeration, our students master both diagnoses and repair of system malfunctions, emphasizing EPA 609 Clean Air Act guidelines for refrigerant handling and replacement.

“The Mobile Air Climate Systems Assn. (MACS) guidelines and fundamentals are woven throughout our curriculum, enabling students to sit for the EPA 609 certification exam. Recognized as a symbol of excellence, certified graduates are prepared to work on and troubleshoot automotive HVAC systems with confidence,” explained William Kirshner, department chair, industrial technology and diesel technology, Central Texas College.

“MACS is the central hub of everything related to the mobile air climate industry.  From innovation to training to networking, the members and the staff create an environment that is ideal for idea sharing and success for every channel in the industry,” explained Ted Hughes of Mahle Aftermarket.

“More than any other organization, MACS speaks directly to a very important target market for Inficon – the mobile A/C service community. While most automotive organizations deal broadly with all systems, MACS is laser-focused on A/C. With this focus comes a level of expertise that is useful in so many ways,” said Matt Farel, Sales Manager Automotive Aftermarket for Inficon.

Thanks to these MACS members for their testimonials pointing to the value they find in their membership.

Now, here’s my answer to the question.

I value my MACS membership just as you value an old friend. MACS has always been there for me whenever I sought advice, a pat on the back or a realization that I needed to know and learn more. MACS is more than a membership; it’s being part of a group of professionals who are always willing to help in any way and glad to see you when they can.
